2. Employment Preparation

Even before you start actively looking for a job, it’s useful to spend time thinking about, planning, and doing the work to develop materials about you that describe what you’ve done and what you’re capable of doing. This is how you tell people who don’t know you the story of you as a worker.

Materials to make and update:

  • Resume
    • I have a master résumé that has all the jobs I’ve ever done, and descriptions of the work I did. I edit that resume to match up with job descriptions when I apply, and if I add new accomplishment descriptions for jobs I’ve done in the past, I add those into my master resume
    • It’s a good idea to keep the format and layout of your resume looking modern and up to date as time passes.
    • You can research resume templates to download and use – many are free. Try a search like “resume template <current year>
    • Job search service HireClub offers a free resume builder and a document version you can edit: resume builder or GDoc version.  I like their materials because you can duplicate, modify and download a PDF of a modern beautiful resume. They did all the designing so you can focus off making your text impactful – that’s important.
  • Cover letter template
  • LinkedIn profile
